Character
Character Name: Kyoko Sakura
Canon: Puella Magi Madoka Magica
Age: She's assumed to be 14-15; I'll be playing her as 15.
Appearance: Official Art
Canon Point: Before entering Sayaka's maze with Madoka.
History: http://wiki.puella-magi.net/Kyoko_Sakura
AU History: -
Personality:

Kyoko isn’t the sort of person who makes a good first impression on people.

Rough, callous and sharp-tongued, from her very first appearance in the PMMM anime Kyoko makes it clear that she feels little for others, and is willing to do whatever it takes to secure her place as the Puella Magi of the city, whether it be chasing Miki Sayaka away through force or just killing her if she fails to get the message.

Her mindset in those early episodes is shown to be uncompromising and driven; she fights for herself and no-one else. If that means she has to wait for a familiar to eat a few people and turn into a plump witch worth hunting, then she doesn’t care. Everything is centered on her and her needs; other people do not matter, and especially not wet-behind-the-ears rival Puella Magi with stupid ideas on how the whole thing works! As a veteran, Kyoko battles with the sort of confidence born from experience, and looks at things with a logical eye, rather than an emotional one. She's a firm believer in using your head, not your heart, which is why Sayaka gets on her nerves during their first meeting, what with all this talk of 'using her powers to help people'. Kyoko takes her job seriously, and cannot stand those who would make a contract with Kyubey for a stupid or ignorant reason. It's not a game just anyone can play.

It takes a few big reveals about the truth of Puella Magi for her to truly open up about who she really is; underneath her sharp exterior, Kyoko is a kind-hearted girl who was willing to make a contract with Kyubey in order to bring happiness to her father, although her wish was misguided and ended in tragedy. Then, when she sees Sayaka starting to make the same mistake she did, she reaches out to her and tries to help, despite their rocky start. The harsh personality was born of the events that followed her transformation, and the shattering of her innocent, well-meaning naivete. Following this experience, she vows to only use her magic for her own needs, as helping people with it only leads to despair.

When she's unable to stop Sayaka from spiralling into depression and transforming into a witch, Kyoko quickly steps up to fight for her. Despite all her hard talk and actions, Kyoko hates being alone, and doesn't want Sayaka to have to suffer that, even if it means she dies with her. The entire fiasco shows a softer side to Kyoko; when Homura is coldly informing Madoka of Sayaka's fate, Kyoko grabs her and demands to know how she can stand being so cold in front of Sayaka's best friend. Earlier on, she'd been casually threatening to break the limbs of Sayaka's love.

It also shows off her determination and resourcefulness; despite the grim outlook, Kyoko refuses to give up on Sayaka, and formulates a plan which she thinks may work to bring her back. It brings her back to her younger days where she believed in stories where love and courage triumphed, before she made the contract with Kyubey. Stories like that were the reason she became a Puella Magi, which displays how similar she is to Sayaka after all. When fighting her in her Witch form, Kyoko is quite accepting of the fact that Sayaka is beating her; after all, it's what she did to her when they first met. Fair is fair.

In the end, Kyoko has metamorphosised from the harsh, cruel person she was at the beginning of the series to someone who was willing to sacrifice her life to ensure a friend would not die alone, who would stop at nothing to try and save someone she cared about from a fate worse than death. And in the end, that's who Kyoko really is; not a selfish, cold fighter who cares nothing for those around her, but a determined, selfless warrior willing to give her all to save those who mean something to her.

Due to the deeper parts of her personality only being revealed once certain events have happened in canon, I will be utilizing the surface-level personality seen in the early episodes until she starts regaining some of the memories that caused her to reveal that she’s really not that bad after all. Her true personality will be there, just buried.

Abilities:
 In her Puella Magi form, Kyoko has heightened abilities that surpass that of a human, such as increased strength, increased agility and stamina (she can leap up the sides of a building) and increased resistance to injury.

 She has telepathic powers, and can communicate silently with others through thoughts.

 Kyoko’s main weapon is her spear, of which the length is adjustable. She uses it mainly for hand-to-hand combat. The spear has a second, hidden ability; inside, it contains a chain, and Kyoko is able to use it as such, whipping it into her opponents. She is able to summon her spear without transforming into her Puella Magi form, out of her soul gem. The soul gem is worn on her left hand, in the form of a silver ring with a red stone.

 She can create a red chain that is used mainly as a barrier. This can be used either as a wall, or can be formed into a cage for purposes of protection or restriction.

 Her ultimate attack is in the form of a giant chain-spear, which stabs into the target in question. It is exceptionally powerful, however Kyoko is unable to perform it without sacrificing her own life in the process to call up the energy.

Memories:

How she came to be a Puella Magi. (Possibly her most important memory, or if not that, the most useful! Kyoko will be fully aware of the fact that she is a Puella Magi, and will be completely aware of how to access and use her powers, but will have simply no idea how she came to obtain them. This will be made harder for her when she realises that she’s the exception, not the norm, especially around other citizens of the bath-house.)

Why she became a Puella Magi. (Kyoko's wish for her father was centered around her belief that love and courage would triumph; losing that memory may make her less naive, but it also makes her selfish and cold.)

Kyubey's existence. (In her earlier episodes, Kyoko appears to have a fairly casual relationship with Kyubey; that of workmates rather than friends. As the series goes on her opinion of him quickly sours, as does their relationship. While not an overly vital memory, Kyubey is the major piece that holds all her magic-related memories together.)

Madoka Kaname's existence. (While not being overly familiar with Madoka, Kyoko found her kindness and dedication to her best friend quite moving, and she helped her remember that she too once believed in stories of courageous heroes.)

Horuma Akemi's existence. (Homura and Kyoko were more allies than friends, per say, but Homura was still a major part of her life.)

Miki Sayaka's existence. (Sayaka was the catalyst that allowed Kyoko to remember who she truly was. Though their relationship started quite badly, as time went on Kyoko could see a lot of herself within Sayaka; that naive but well-meaning hope to help and save others. It got to the point where Kyoko was determined to find a way to revert Sayaka back to who she was, no matter the cost to herself. This distinct switch from selfish to selfless was a major turning point for Kyoko as a person; without these memories, she'll remain cold, vicious and only out for what will benefit her.)

Mami Tomoe's existence. (Kyoko's familiarity with Mami was vague at best, but with no knowledge of any other Puella Magi, she will feel quite alone and isolated.)

Her father’s existence. (Kyoko’s love for her father was the main reason she chose to become a Puella Magi. She couldn’t bear to see people turning away from his teachings as she saw them as completely correct and righteous. However, forcing people to attend through Kyubey’s magic backfired spectacularly when her father found out, triggering a breakdown that ended with the murder of her mother and sister by her father, who then hung himself. Kyoko was the only one left alive, and it broke her quite badly.)

Her mother and little sister Momo's existence. (Throughout the ordeal of her father’s excommunication from the church, Momo and her mother were there by her side, suffering with her. Losing the memory of them will increase Kyoko’s feeling of loneliness in the bath-house.)

The true nature of the soul gems. (Instead of being aware that her soul is literally inside her soul gem, Kyoko will believe it's just a pretty ornament that powers her transformation. She will, however, be very possessive of it and never allow it to leave her sight, or let another person touch it. It’s a bit of a berserk button for her, now that she doesn’t have the clear memory of why it’s so important. All she knows is that she cannot ever lose it or let it get damaged.)

New Name: Okky

Samples
First Person:

Oi!

[[The video feed flicks on to reveal an irate teenage girl, her red hair falling over her face as she leans into the camera, snarling angrily.]]

When I find whoever's been hitting up my stash, you're gunna pay for it! I spent all of last week’s pay on those rolls, and there's three missing! I count them twice every time I take some, just in case something like this happens!

[[The girl pauses to stand and stomp around the room for a moment, yelling furiously and pausing to occasionally kick the nearest bedroll. Upon calming down, she strides back to the camera, her face controlled and cold.]]

You better eat them. Don't you dare waste food, you hear me? If I find you wasted them, or you threw them out, I'll find you, and I’ll kill you. You see if I don't.

[[As she says this, her left hand tightens, and the movement of her fingers causes her ring to flash red. But only for a second.]]

You'll see.

Third Person:

It was too damn early to be up.

Muttering under her breath, Okky heaved a large pot up onto the stove with a loud clang. Around her, the other cooks were firing up the ovens, chopping fruit and vegetables, and generally preparing for the day's meals at the bath-house. Her job was to prepare the stew that would be eaten by the other employees when they awoke, before starting work.

Okky couldn't stand the stew; it was always so thin and bland no matter who made it. But someone had to, and today the lucky winner of that particular task was her. Continuing to mutter, and rubbing at her eyes, she staggered over to the vegetable store to gather up the necessary ingredients.

Her standards were high, but even so; to Okky, every vegetable had the potential to be used. While her mind had been feeling so empty these days, she could distinctly remember a time in her life when food had been a rare privilege. She didn't know why she'd been in poverty, or how she'd managed to escape it, but her stomach was still haunted by the ghosts of the racking hunger pains that had plagued her for those many uncomfortable, tedious months.

The head chef often yelled at her for putting small or spotted vegetables into the stew, but Okky didn't care. She just made sure he didn't see her adding them, now. How she hated that insufferable man; some of the food he threw out was perfectly usable! But yelling at him earned her nothing but a sharp cut in pay that week, and attacking him earned her a horrid beating from that witch Yubaba. And a sharp cut in pay that week. She quickly learned that it wasn't worth it.

So she simply smiled deviously to herself as he turned away, quickly shoving the pile of vegetables she had deftly chopped into the pot. What that bastard of a head chef didn't know about was her secret stash of food, stolen (recycled) before it could get thrown away and wasted. And as long as she remained under the radar, she would continue doing it.

And hell, maybe even once she was found out, too.
